The legendary Great Bear Rainforest is the largest temperate rainforest in the world, renowned for its rich wildlife. Here we’ll encounter grizzly bears, black bears, and the rare and iconic spirit bear, alongside wolves, bald eagles, sea otters, and countless other species that thrive only in this unique ecosystem.

Itinerary Details

Day 1
Arrival in Terrace, Canada – Meet the Group and Guide

We’ll gather in the town of Terrace, reached via a short flight from Vancouver. After a city tour, we’ll meet our guide and fellow travelers. Terrace has a fascinating industrial past and cultural attractions such as the Heritage Park Museum, the “Old Bridge,” and George Little House – home of the town’s founder. You may also enjoy the Terrace Art Gallery, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants.

Welcome Aboard the Ship!

After breakfast, we set sail into the spectacular Great Bear Rainforest. As we cruise through fjords and remote inlets, we’ll encounter breathtaking scenery and wildlife. Our naturalist and photography guide will introduce us to the region’s rich ecosystem of plants, birds, and marine life.

Land of Whales

We sail along Douglas Channel, home to large gatherings of humpback whales. Here we may see them breaching or performing bubble-net feeding – a unique cooperative hunting strategy. The area is also home to orcas, sea lions, porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters, and Steller sea lions.

In Search of the Spirit Bear

We continue to Princess Royal Island – the best place to find the rare Spirit Bear. Guided by local members of the Gitga’at Nation, we’ll spend two full days patiently observing salmon streams in hopes of spotting this white-furred black bear, sacred to their culture. With luck, we’ll also encounter grizzlies, black bears, coastal wolves, and bald eagles.

With the Great Grizzlies

This part of the journey focuses on grizzly bears as they follow salmon runs along wild rivers and estuaries. The abundance of salmon attracts bears, wolves, and eagles. By small boats we’ll approach riverbanks and tidal flats for unforgettable encounters and extraordinary photo opportunities.

Day 9
Milbanke Sound, Bella Bella & Flight Home

We arrive at Milbanke Sound, where we may see sea otters resting on kelp beds, sea lions hauled out on rocky shores, and orcas patrolling the channels. Our voyage concludes in Bella Bella, a small First Nations community of 1,450 residents located on Campbell Island. From here we’ll transfer to the local airport for a charter flight to Vancouver, connecting to international flights home.
